HANOI, September 23, 2013 — Pursuant to the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership signed by Presidents Barack Obama and Truong Tan Sang in July, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman visited Hanoi on September 23, 2013, to discuss a wide range of energy issues.
In meetings with senior Vietnamese government officials and corporate representatives, the Deputy Secretary explored how the United States and Vietnam can advance cooperation on issues including energy efficiency, renewable energy, peaceful nuclear energy development and nonproliferation, energy security, and infrastructure development. “Energy cooperation is a pivotal aspect of our new U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership,” said Deputy Secretary Poneman, “and we welcome growing engagement with the Vietnamese across the full spectrum of energy and sustainable growth areas.” The Deputy Secretary addressed the possibilities for greater government-to-government partnerships and prospects to promote commercial opportunities, as well as expanded cooperation in multilateral fora including APEC and ASEAN.
