The Embassy commemorated International Day of the Girl on October 9, with an event at the American Center focused on women and girls’ empowerment with over 80 students ranging in age from 5-12 in attendance. The USA Girl Scouts Overseas Troop of Hanoi, a mix of international and Vietnamese girls, along with Mission Vietnam officers affiliated with the program, led a panel discussion on this issue. The girl scouts also introduced their global action project, “Protect the Environment and Animals,” and engaged the local students in focus groups aimed at developing a global action project specific to Vietnam while discussing the unique challenges girls face in the local environment. In her opening remarks, Chargé d’Affaire Claire Pierangelo attended the event and impressed upon the girls their ability and responsibility to galvanize global commitments to end gender stereotypes, discrimination, violence, and economic disparities that disproportionately affect women and girls.
