HANOI, June 12, 2014 – The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi and Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade’s General Directorate of Energy will host a two-day Unconventional Gas Technical Engagement Program (UGTEP) workshop on June 12 and 13. The UGTEP workshop, held under the auspices of the U.S. Asia Pacific Comprehensive Energy Partnership (USACEP), will focus on the technical aspects of sustainable unconventional gas development in the region. The workshop will be conducted in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines, and will share lessons for safe and efficient unconventional gas development with representatives from both APEC member economies and ASEAN member states.

“The United States has realized many benefits in recent years from the development of unconventional natural gas, such as greater energy security, reduction of unemployment, greater industrial competitiveness globally, and a wide range of environmental and economic benefits,” said U.S. Embassy Hanoi Economic Counselor Laura Stone at the workshop’s opening ceremony. “Combining the benefits of responsible unconventional gas development with sound regional gas market fundamentals will go a long way toward greater domestic and regional energy security.”

The two-day workshop highlights key lessons learned with unconventional gas development, including discussions on establishing best practices for regulations and environmental protection measures. Participants will also discuss effective identification of, and safe access to, unconventional gas reservoirs.
