U.S. EPA Administrator Hands Over Mercury Monitor to Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment

Hanoi, April 15, 2014 – United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy handed over to the Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) a mercury monitoring unit after a bilateral meeting at MONRE on April 15. The mercury monitor, provided by the U.S. National Atmospheric Deposition Program, will be transferred to the MONRE’s Center for Environmental Monitoring and assist Vietnam in measuring levels of mercury in precipitation in Vietnam.

International transportation of the mercury monitoring unit was kindly donated by U.S. express delivery services company UPS. This in-kind donation serves as an example of U.S. companies advancing corporate social responsibility in Vietnam.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy is in Hanoi, Vietnam on April 15 – 16 to highlight environmental cooperation between the U.S. and partners within the Asia-Pacific Region. Administrator McCarthy’s visit will underscore the importance of local and community engagement in protecting natural resources. Vietnam is an active and valued participant in multiple regional environmental initiatives which EPA helps organize.
