EPA Administrator Visits Hanoi, Highlights Environmental Cooperation

HANOI, April 16, 2014 – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy visited Hanoi on April 15 – 16 to highlight environmental cooperation between the United States and Vietnam along with the two countries’ regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region. The Administrator underscored the importance of local and community engagement in protecting natural resources.

Administrator McCarthy met with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) Nguyen Minh Quang on April 15 to discuss ways the United States can support Vietnam’s efforts. Discussions touched on Vietnam’s active participation in regional environmental initiatives and the country’s commitment to host the 2014 meetings of the International E-Waste Management Network (IEMN) and the Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network. Vietnam’s decision to host the 2014 IEMN and Asia-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Meetings is indicative of the leadership role it is taking on regional environmental issues. By sharing best practices on environmental protection, countries can assist each other in making environmental improvements at the community level, where they matter most. The Administrator also discussed Vietnam’s interest in joining the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), an international coalition to combat short-lived climate pollutants.

“Fighting pollution, locally; betters our world, globally. A clean, healthy environment is a foundation on which we can build a sustainable economy for the 21st century. Prosperity for all our people depends on our continued cooperation,” said Administrator McCarthy during a speech to over 150 students at Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE) on April 16.

Administrator McCarthy also met with 30 female high school and university students at the new American Center Hanoi to discuss the importance, challenges, and benefits of pursuing a career in the sciences. She joined a lake clean up and tree planting project in conjunction with the local non-governmental organization Center for Environment and Community Research to promote a cleaner, healthier environment for the people of Vietnam. The Administrator concluded her visit to Hanoi by meeting with business leaders and environmental stakeholders in the region.
