2014 STUDY OF THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE
ON U.S. NATIONAL SECURITY POLICYMAKING
The U.S. Mission to Vietnam seeks suitable candidates to nominate for the 2014 Study of the United States
Institutes (SUSI) program on U.S. National Security Policymaking. University-level faculty or national security
professionals from institutions of higher education, or national security policymaking institutions, including
national military academies, government ministries, and think-tanks who wish to apply for the programs are
invited to complete the attached application form and send it to the Embassy’s Public Affairs Section (PAS) by
Monday, October 14, 2013.
Program Overview
Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) on U.S. National Security Policymaking is a rigorous post-graduatelevel academic seminar with an integrated study tour that will provide a group of 18 scholars and professionals
an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the foundations of U.S. national security policy and current
threats facing the United States. The institute focuses on the formulation of U.S. foreign and national security
policy and the role of the federal government, think-tanks, media, and public opinion in shaping that policy. The
program will examine specific security issues such as twenty-first century defense requirements, counter
terrorism strategies, energy security, economic stability, cyber-security, chemical and biological weapons,
nuclear weapons and infectious diseases. The program will also focus on regional security concerns in Africa,
Europe, South Asia, the Western Hemisphere, East Asia, and the Middle East. The program will be
supplemented by a simulation exercise, a group project, and a study tour to another region of the United States.
Hosted by the Institute for Training and Development (ITD) in Amherst, Massachusetts, the program will take
place over the course of six weeks, from March 7, 2014 to April 19, 2014. All participant costs, including:
program administration, international and domestic travel and ground transportation, housing and subsistence,
book, cultural, mailing and incidental allowances will be sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Candidate Qualifications
Eligible candidates for the SUSI on U.S. National Security Policymaking must:
 be between the ages of 30-50;
 be highly motivated and experienced university-level faculty or national security professionals,
preferably those having graduate degrees and substantial knowledge of the thematic area of the institute;
 be an experienced professional with little or no prior experience in the U.S., whose home institution is
seeking to introduce aspects of U.S. studies into its curricula; to enhance and update existing courses on
the U.S.; to develop new courses in the subject of the institute;
 be comfortable with campus life and willing and able to fully take part in an intensive post-graduate
level academic program and study tour; and
 have excellent command of English.Application
